The Great Buddha
The Kotokuin was constructed in 1252. It has a bronze statue “Great Buddha Statue” that stands 13 meters high, sitting cross-legged, robed with drapes in the classical lines reminiscent of ancient Greece, cast in 1292. It sits outside against wooden hills.
Duration: 30 minutes
Stop At: Hase-dera Temple, 3-11-2 Hase, Kamakura 248-0016 Kanagawa Prefecture
This temple is famous for housing a Buddhist statue of Kannon, Goddess of Mercy, with eleven faces and a thousand arms. Each of the eleven faces represents a different phase in the search for enlightenment. The 9.18 meter tall, gilded wooden statue is regarded as one of the largest wooden sculpture in Japan. You can also enjoy the pretty garden with ponds and the Jizo-do Hall with hundreds of small statues of the Jizo Bodhisattva who helps the souls of dead children to reach the paradise.
Duration: 30 minutes
Stop At: Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, 2-1-31 Yukinoshita, Kamakura 248-0005 Kanagawa Prefecture

Private Half -Day Tour of Kamakura from Tokyo including the Great Buddha was beyond expectations !!! Taguchi Tetsuyuki was our excellent guide. He met us at our hotel and guided us through the day with return to our hotel. Yuki as he asked to be called was intelligent, personable and shared a vast und of knowledge about Japan and the history of the sites in Kamakura. It was a most interesting and enjoyable day and tour. I highly recommend this tour !!!
We learned a lot on this tour - our guide met us at our hotel and we took the train to Kamakura - the train was busy so be prepared to potentially stand the entire 45-60 minute ride! Our guide gave us the option of renting electric bikes and we chose that option for a price - it turned out to be a fun way albeit dangerous to see the sites! It was a beautiful day to visit. In the end, we encouraged our guide to take the train back without us so we could explore more on our own. It's a 5 hour tour, but probably 2-3 hours depending on hotel location and train schedules are just gettting there and back. The main reason for 4 stars and not 5 was that we really felt rushed - I would've liked more time to explore on such a beautiful day and our guide had to get back to Tokyo for a meeting. If I go back, I would not get a guide, but we had no idea how to do it on our own. It's really fairly easy and I'd rather go at our own pace.
