Without asking our permission they merged our English speaking Communism tour with a French speaking Bus tour of Budapest with a Danube cruise. Our tour was supposed to be for no more than one other person besides my husband and myself. When the tour guide walked in and and told us and another couple to come with him I told him that could not be right because our tour was supposed to be for three people max and I asked him if he was sure he knew we had signed up for the communism tour. He assured me that he was taking us on the Communism tour. Our tour was supposed to be three hours long but at the end of three hours we had seen no communist sights. His French was obviously better than his English because he spent most of his time talking to the French couple as we went to the Parliament building, Heroes Square and Fisherman's Bastion. I kept telling the tour guide that we were on the wrong tour and he kept assuring me that this is the way they had decided to do our tour. After three hours, we waited in the car while he put the French couple on a boat for a cruise on the Danube. Then we headed towards Memento Park, only to find out that neither the tour guide nor the driver had ever been there before. The guide told us that he had never done this tour before. They had no idea where we were going and we spent a lot of time turning around and looking for Memento Park. Once we found the park, all we did was walk through and look at the statues. The guide did tell us a little about some of the statues but not much. We did not see the Secret police training film and we did not drive through the Communist-era housing estate that were both promised to us in the description of the tour. Adding an extra two hours to our incomplete tour also interfered with the plans we had made for the afternoon. This tour was a big disappointment. I would give it NEGATIVE STARS if I could. We booked with Viator and it was operated by Countryside Excursions. Not only was it a waste of our time and interfered with our plans for the rest of day but it was a complete waste of money in every way because we already had scheduled a tour for the next day in which we were going to see the places where he took us to that were really on the French couple's tour, not ours. The French couple showed me the paperwork describing their tour just before that were put on the boat.
Brilliant way to see the city. I miss these crazy cars. Lovely and informative guide.
